I had the privilege of hearing from him and Bernie Dorfman - business builder and founder of CEO Space. Together they answered that question in two ways:

#1) Bernie Dorfman went into a deep explanation about the stock market, hedge funds and how they have been responsible for all 3 great economic collapses in the USA.

He explained how these 'side bets' on the stock market used to take place in smoky parlor rooms, a lot like a 'bookie' operation.

In a nutshell, people would bet against a stock (or the growth of a company) and then, when enough people bet against a company, the stock would indeed go down. THEN, the better would pick up those stocks at the reduced price and wait for it to go up again - thus profiting illegally. This has caused the US economy to crash 3 times.

This includes the bust of 1909 and the great stock crash of 1929. Most informative though, was his explanation of how these tactics, which were made illegal after the Great Depression, were given the green light after the BANKING LOBBY pressured congress to pass a bill in 2001.

It then took all of 7 years for this proven BAD IDEA to bankrupt the ordinary guy on the street. Bad. It speaks to either the incompetence or corruption of the banking industry. Well, I guess they are reaping what they sewed as more and more of them go under.
