The TV Gods have smiled upon us finally and handed over a moment in TV history that NBC can truly be proud of. To say that this new TV show: Studio 60, Live from the Sunset Strip is a good show is an understatement. Alan Sorkin and Tommy Schlamme team up and bring out the best in each other. It is a great moment in art, history and the examination of human nature. I discovered it by accident, after half watching ‘Deal or No Deal’, I saw the trailer, it looked interesting so I tuned in to see the show that is clearly based on the early years of “Saturday Night Live” - back when it was great cutting edge comedy. It has since been watered down immensely, and this is exactly the issue that “Studio 60″ addresses as the show unfolds and gives us moments remeniscent of the Academy Award winning movie “Network”. The next 10 minutes was one of those rare, “Oh my God, I can’t believe what I am seeing.” mixtures of shock and joy. It’s good. It’s really good. My next thought after realizing just how cutting edge and good this show is, was to call my friend Laila.
I’ll tell you why I instantly had to call Laila in a moment, but first lets back up to the early years of Saturday Night Live - the years of Steve Martin, John Balushi, Chevy Chase, Gilda Rander, Dan Akroyd, Garrett Morris, Jane Curtin, Lariaine Newman and political satire like it hasn’t been seen since in this country. Sure John Stewart is good - but he’s just one guy, Saturday Night Live was a confluence of talent that together took each other to a higher level. I wasn’t even a teenager then, and it was on way past my bedtime but I remember going to sleep and hearing it on TV as my parents watched it in the other room. I knew then that it was something special. Having the good luck to catch an old episode where Steve Martin performed his legendary “King Tut” sketch recently left me rolling on the ground, it stood the test of time. And it can’t just be me who thought those guys were geniuses, almost every single one of them launched huge movie careers after being on the show. This is why I had to call Laila, you see she used to produce Saturday Night Live back then (sorry for dating you Laila). And she agreed, Studio 60 was like flashing back to those days for her. Laila isn’t really one to toot her own horn, but she gave Tom Hanks his first big break, right there on Saturday Night Live.
Laila Nabulsi is the only person I have ever met who’s birthday is on New Years Eve - Dec. 31. This is also the only day of the year that is governed by the Joker card. It’s sure not a stretch to see that the Joker should be working in comedy. And this brings me to a secret of esoteric proportions. Back in the days of Kings and feudal lords, every court had a resident Joker, Jester or Fool. Once a year it was the Joker’s job to step up to the throne and take the place of the King and make fun of him, his court and human nature. From these ancient roots was born our current tradition of “The Roast” where friends gather to tease, taunt and generally harass a guest of honor. When done well, this can be excruciatingly funny. Check out the Stephen Colbert presidential roast of GW Bush. Of course, true to Studio 60’s themes - this roast of GW never made it onto Network Television; dispite the fact that Stephen Colbert is truly hilarious. Good luck finding it on Google. It is so on the mark that even Google has edited it out of their results, the link above seems to be the only place left that even has the video anymore!
December 31 is in the Sign of Capricorn which is ruled by Saturn. If any planet is capable of crushing cruelty, it is Saturn. In Tarot Saturn is the Devil card, and I have often seen people turn white as a sheet when this card shows up in their reading. But the fear is a manifestation of not understanding what the Devil represents. He repesents all of our human false beliefs, beliefs that lead us to do and be or confront the darkest parts of the human soul. Capricorn people often have to face and confront the darkest aspects of human nature, either in themselves or others. This is particularly true for those born during the 3 darkest days of the year - the Winter Solstice, Dec 22, 23, and 24 (depending on the year it can vary to the 21st and the 25th). This is why we celebrate Christmas on the 25th - to bring light and celebration to this darkness. The timing of Christmas is also co-opted from the ancient pagan rituals that were designated for just this purpose.
The esoteric secret of the Devil - and therefore Saturn is that humor and laughter are the most powerful and effective weapons that we have against his darkness. The fastest way to clear dark energy from a building is with laughter, the same is true for people. Where there is humor dark spirits can’t hang out for long. By offering ones self up as a joke, we clear away the garbage. This is probably why so many comedians are tortured souls. We often laugh because otherwise we’d cry. It is the most palatable way to confront the truth. If a joke makes someone angry - that is usually because there is some truth in it, and they don’t like that truth or are somehow invested in keeping the truth buried and hidden. And secrets are that Devil Saturn’s playground.
The Devil called Saturn, in all his manifestations at the core represents the false belief that physical reality dominates the spiritual intangible aspects of humanity. This is NOT true, but believing this falsehood paves the way for all sorts of perversions of the human condition. Everything from the desire for power over others, to war, control, greed, powermongering, the abuse of children, violence, rape, laziness, ego, addiction, illness and vanity can be the resuts. The antidote is laughter, because after all, what your mother told you is true; Laughter IS the best medicine. And comedy in it’s most inspired form confronts us with a profound truth in such a way that we can triumph over it and be left with the one thing that humorless, or Saturn dominated people can never experience - Hope.

Today is Sept 22nd (check this blog’s time stamp). And here in the West coast it is the Fall Equinox. On the East coast the Equinox is tomorrow. Can you take an egg out of your refrigerator and balance it on end? Today it should be easy enough for anyone to do in less than a minute.
There are naysayers on the web who claim that this can be done on any day of the year. I personally have found it impossible to balance an egg for the past two months. I tried this on the very same counter where there are now two eggs balancing on end - one put there by me, and one put there by my boyfriend Lennie They have been there for over 4 hours now, and counting….
And this has led me to a little experiment. With the help of a friend of ours we filmed the egg balancing this morning in his studio. And we will film it again in a week to see if there is any difference betwen the Equinox and a day that is NOT an Equinox. But seeing is believing, so check back and we’ll have the video up as soon as possible. And of course, there’s no greater proof than your own experience, so go ahead and try it. And then try it again next week and see if there is any difference. We can probably count tomorrows results as falling within the parameters of the actual Equinox no matter what coast you are on since there is a little bit of lead up and fade out time involved with the Equinox phenomenon.
The Equinox is one of two days in the year when the balance of light between night and day is exactly equal - thus the name. The other date is March 22, also known as the Spring Equinox. Part of the reason for this, and the reason that we have seasons and the Winter and Summer Solstices is because of the relationship between the Equator and the Sun, also known as the Declination. On the Equinoxes the SUN is on the same level as the Earth’s Equator. It is at 0′ zero degress Declination. On the Summer Solstice it is at it’s farthest North point - and therefore gives us the longest day of the year. On the Winter Solstice the SUN is at it’s farthest South point and therefore gives us the shortest day of the year.
This seemingly complicated geometry is what sets the Astrology that I use apart from the standard flat map Astrology which is all most people have ever heard about. If the Equinox - and therefore the Declination - has an effect on the Egg, what do you think it does to you?

Yesterday’s top story on Yahoo was about the contaminated spinach that has killed several people over the past few days. This issue is a huge one that is much bigger than just the current spinach E. Coli scare, and every person in America should be concerned about this and other frightening developments in our food supply. In a related story yesterday the FDA approved the use of Viruses to fight food contaminated with - um - well, other viruses. I can’t see what part of this seems like a good idea. I mean if you set two rabid dogs after each other in the guise of protecting the bystanders, how surprised can you be when the bystanders get bitten and infected? And in yet another disturbing story on Toxins and Pesticides it seems that nothing is safe to eat anymore. This isn’t something that we can just ignore and hope it will go away. It’s only going to get worse.
A few Astrological reasons for this are:
#1 the Saturn Neptune opposition that lasts until August 2007 gives the pharmaceutical industry and FDA (both ruled by Neptune) too much control (Saturn). Saturn opposed Neptune is also a pathologically scientific and inflexible viewpoint. Multiply that by the fact that both planets are sitting in inflexible fixed signs and you get a stonewall that rivals the great wall of china.
#2 the problems don’t end just because this aspect is over a year from now, in fact they get worse because Saturn enters Virgo - the sign that governs health, well being, and among other things the foods we eat and agriculture. During the 3 years that Saturn trekks through Virgo he squares Pluto (the planet of big business an power). This is nothing short of a revolution or a nuclear explosion in the realms of health and philosophical outlook. But the real question is that by then is it too late?
Recent developments in agricultural practices in this country have led to the destruction of the aquifers and in Florida they have begun to replace this delicate and crucial natural balance by pumping processed sewage back into these same aquifers. What this means is that whatever byproducts are in the processed sewage enter the drinking water supply. Just a few of these by products are things like, E. Coli and the various FDA approved drugs that the population is popping, such as Valium, Viagra, Vioxx just to name a few….
Similar developments have effected the fertilizers used in the farming industry. Not just commercial farming either, Organic farms are being hit by the same toxic problems. This whole subject is covered thoroughly in a book that I highly recommend called,The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight. Another book that details the effects of the waisline expanding American Beef diet is Diet for a Small Planet, the seminal written work of the Heir to the Baskin Robbins empire.
People are getting ill at an alarming rate in this country, and not just old people. Young and otherwise healthy people are getting sick - and they shouldn’t be. If you think this can’t effect you, then think again. Another great source of information is Al Gore’s documentary: An Inconvenient Truth which I think everyone should see.
My own experience is that I am an exceedingly healthy person. I have always taken my good health for granted, in fact I didn’t even get so much as a cold for almost 6 years. I am not saying this to brag but rather to illustrate my point. Over the past year or so, I have found it increasingly difficult to eat out, and it doesn’t matter if I’m eating somewhere expensive or not. About half the time I get sick. Nauseaus, woozy, intestinal troubles, really lousy feeling and sometimes it lasts for days. And this has led me personally to a complete change in my diet to where I now almost eat no meat at all, no breads and no sugar. I am pretty close to a raw foods diet, eating primarily vegitables, fruits and fresh juices. And I feel amazing. I have never had high energy levels, but that has completely changed since I changed my food. Call me a purist, but I am the last person in the world to do such a thing. I have always kind of sneered at vegitarians, because, hey, I like meat. But after being so afflicted all year, I have come to the conclusion that I like my health better.
I am not suggesting that everyone should do what I have done, I am extremely sensitive, and this has been what is necessary for me to function at my highest level. But I am suggesting that every last one of us needs to pay closer attention not only to the foods that we put in our bodies, but also what we allow to happen to our food chain. The best solution is to eat locally and buy from trusted sources, or even better start a garden, and get involved in the political process.
The Egg and Autumn Equinox - Complete with an Eclipse
This year the Autumn Equinox (Sept 22 Pacific/Sept 23 Eastern) follows the New Moon Solar Eclipse at 29′ Virgo. And to make matters more confusing the Eclipse takes place right on the USA’s Neptune. Has anyone noticed that September has been a bumpy month so far? Well there are more bumps to come surrounding this second Eclipse.
The first thing about the Equinox - and arguably the most fun - is the folklore that an egg can be balanced on it’s end only during an Equinox. There are only two Equinoxes per year, in Spring and in Fall. It is named the Equinox because these are the two days of the year when daylight and nightime are exactly equal. In Summer daytime is longer than night, and in Winter nighttime is longer than day. The Equinox’s signal the day when the transition from one season transitions into the next.
I know that I personally have been able to balance an egg on end during an Equinox - I even balanced it on it’s small pointy end that day. Actually I balanced every egg in my cousins refrigerator on end, and then every egg in my own refrigerator. I even left one on the counter overnight to see if it would stay there. But the next morning it had tumbled to the floor and broken. I have been trying for about a month to balance an egg with no luck. I will be taping this, and then I’m going to tape what happens on the actual Equinox just to see what happens. I invite anyone else who’s interested to try their own egg experiment. I’d love to hear the results. I have no preconcieved decisions about what will and won’t work, and am very interested to see and hear the what results people achieve.
