Uranus: Planet of Rebellion

URANUS was the grandfather of all the gods of Greek/Roman mythology. He was the sky god, who took power by castrating his father Kronos. As legend has it, when he did so the galaxies, stars and planets were created from the castrated organ. This story could be looked at as the Greek personification of a ‘big bang’ theory. When URANUS become the supreme god, he created the atmosphere and life on earth by mating with the Earth herself, the goddess GAIA. The two however did not get along and rivaled with each other for power, causing floods, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. This was a turbulent time and could be paralleled with the age of creation that was before and at the beginnings of life on Earth. Human existence on Earth could be paralleled with the age when JUPITER took power from his father URANUS. He did so by castrating him as URANUS had done to his father Kronos. This is sort of the epic Greek version of ‘Those who live by the sword die by the sword’.

In Astrology, the planet URANUS represents unusual and unpredictable events and people. There is something quirky and often genius-like when his energy is present. But often that unusual sparkle is misunderstood and even disliked by the purveyors of the status quo. The status quo usually doesn’t like to be disturbed, and URANUS likes nothing better than to overthrow the existing order of things and bring in radically new and improved ideas. For this reason URANUS lives in a state of constant revolution, upsetting the old order on one hand and guarding his back from the same sort of attack on the other hand. So he can be a bit paranoid, and this is why he is capable of intellectual tyranny. He rules the sky, and the sky represents thoughts and ideas. Therefore he is thought to be brilliant, easily grasping complex ideas, and using them in innovative ways. He also governs the realm of seemingly random geological phenomenon, like earthquakes, floods, meteor showers and volcanic activity.

*According to modern rulerships in Astrology* URANUS rules Aquarius, and Aquarians are really the most unusual people you’re likely to meet. Even if they seem perfectly ordinary on the surface, their minds are usually teeming with all sorts of shocking ideas, often with a hint of disdain for the ‘old’ and the ‘tried and true’ methods of doing things. Sometimes Aquarius’ can be guilty of doing and saying shocking things just for the sake of getting a reaction. They often don’t even mean it, they just like to see people’s jaws drop in astonishment. For this reason they often form alliances and groups that are somewhat outside of the mainstream of society, even on the ‘fringe’. It’s glamorous being an ‘outsider’ after all. But underneath all that rule-breaking behavior sits an almost angelic smiling face who really just wants big brother/daddy to acknowledge their brilliance. This is the archetypal rebellious child who, in their heart of hearts just wants daddy’s approval. But if daddy won’t approve, then they’ll never let him live it down, and may go to any lengths to embarrass or humiliate his stodgy old country club values.

***Please Note*** I use ancient Rulerships for the signs in my Chakra Astrology. I view Uranus as an influence that governs human GROUP ACTIVITIES more than personal archetypes. The original 7 planets govern the personal archetypes, but the outer planets are connected to group activities and human infrastructures. I would describe Uranus as being the Nerous system of society. For this reason Uranus really rules the following areas of life:
Shipping Lines
Electrical Delivery Systems
Trucking Routes
Politics/Rallies/Community Organizations
Housing Developments/Community Planning
Musical Composition
Higher Mathematics
Number Crunching
Stock Markets/Economic Systems

The placement of URANUS in your Natal Chart indicates the ways in which you are likely to think for yourself, or rebel against the values that were handed to you by your father. It also represents you way of relating and connecting to social infrastructures and the systems listed above. This planetary energy indicates the often-complex process of finding one’s own sense of individuality, usually by breaking free from the demands/expectations of the father. It also indicates the gifts that the father gave to you by sending you on this journey in the first place.
